Special Education Advocate
For a multitude of reasons, the relationship between parents and the school district can break down as they negotiate an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Special education decisions can get driven by school budgets. Parents may feel frustrated and suspicious. Our attorney and attorney supervised advocates can help parents identify strategies to effectively negotiate on their child's behalf and identify win-win solutions for their child and school.
The secret in education lies in respecting the pupil." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
Education is a civil right and having a disability means that it may take a special effort by the school districts in order for them to deliver to your child on this promise. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) cover the following disabilities:
- Intellectual disability (mental retardation)
- Hearing, speech and visual impairments
- Emotional disturbance, such as depression and anxiety
- Orthopedic Impairments
- Autism spectrum disorders, such as Aspergers Syndrome and high-functioning Autism
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Epilepsy
- Non-specified disabilities may defy categorization, but can be included in some cases
- Disabilities that limit a major life activity
Many parents who contact us are already involved in negotiating their child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan. We can help organize and identify resources, explain the process and even attend IEP meetings with parents. We advise parents on all aspects of an IEP, including:
- Eligibility testing
- Extended school year or summer school
- Requesting a classroom aide or one-on-one aide
- Least restrictive environment
- Highly-qualified teachers
- Transition plans
