Experienced Parent Advocate
The professionals and consultants in this office have experience as parents, special education teachers, school psychologists, advocates and community leaders. We have family members with disabilities. We have spent time on a school campus as staff or volunteers and getting to know teachers and paraprofessionals. We can appreciate the conflicting emotions and interests that arise between parents, their children, school administrators, teachers and community members. We can help strategize with parents to center everyone's efforts on your child.
As a girl, Attorney Kim Smith was aware of the extra challenge that a person faces when a person has a disability.
"My grandmother had childhood polio and used a wheelchair. We used to push her wheelchair around looking for a ramp so that we could enter a building. I still remember having to pop her up the curb by tipping back the wheelchair, and then heaving the rear wheels onto the sidewalk. People used to complain about the expense of putting ramps or other accommodations into new construction, but I always thought my handicapped grandmother had the same right to access a sidewalk or building as anyone else. The law made it start to happen." — Attorney Kim Smith
Kim's law practice includes pro bono work for Justice in Education and she is a contract attorney for Legal Aid Society of Orange County. Kim was the Vice-President of Legislative affairs for a national non-profit. Kim served as a board member for Orange County Head Start for six years and as an ARMY reservist for eight. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters.
